Nash on the inside:
So I'm not going to tell you what I think should win. I would say anything but Avatar, but who am I kidding, I refused to see it. It would be a trend with Cameron blockbusters apparently. In fact I refused to see Titanic until my Italian family members were watching it and since I was crashing at their house and they only had the one television, I thought it might be rude to scream: NO TITANIC at them. And so yeah, Avatar huh? For the record, Young saw it. He saw it in 3D no less and reports that it was amazing visually and not so much story-wise. But then again, given the trailer, no one thought that there was a story there did they? Also something about Cameron speaking in his own made up language at the Golden Globes? Barf.
Okay! So to the good news, we've seen a fair number of movies and most of them I liked. To wit, for acting: man did the females in Precious steal the show. Feel good movie of the year? Um no. Not even a little. But Mo'Nique and Gabourey Sidibe's acting was fantastic. Seriously. It's not for everyone and after numerous tragedies strike Precious, generally right upside the head, you (and I) might wonder if anything good or anything that isn't traumatic might ever occur in her life. The answer of course is no, but hey, good for you Precious. You keep on, keepin' on.
Animated films? Have you seen Up? We loved Up. I loved Up more specifically, but I'm not going to lie, I liked Wall-E better in the wide world of Pixar. What I liked better than Up in the animated film category: Fantastic Mister Fox. It's Roald Dahl, so it's got kooky. Ditto Wes Anderson. Visually the stop motion animation is stunning. The story is fun and fresh. Probably not kid friendly, but feh, something tells me you're not reading this site for your six year old.
Best movie of the year? Well I mentioned Precious above...and well while I liked it, and holy cow were there tears, I would not call it the best. Also, see Avatar, even though I would bet it wins and man, won't that suck? It will.
Let's get on to the other movies:
Oh I know, how about Up in the Air? Can we all agree that we liked it? I liked it. Also, I'm pretty sure that I'm getting older when I didn't just find my friend George Clooney likeable, but a whole lotta sexy. WTF. Screw you age! Aside from my apparently aging hormones, Up in the Air gets a lot of press as "The movie for our times." And this I found pretty accurate. It was plenty timely: a story about a man who basically lives in airports and airplanes as he travels around the country firing people as his job. It was charming. Okay? Charming. Also, holy freaking delicious George Clooney. Fuck, is it possible to go through the change at 30? I am so screwed.
The Hurt Locker! Uh, whoops! Missed this one (so far) carrying on. Hey we'll just say that I missed The Lovely Bones too. Listen, man, I read the book. There were some real freaking tears as a result of that one. The movie? It looks like that piece from Robin Williams, What Dreams May Come. And well, feh. Although can I give a shout out to my boyfriend, Stanley Tucci? Oh Stanley. I was listening to Stanley Tucci on NPR the other day, and well, he just needs a hug. His wife died recently and she seemed pretty awesome as did Stanley. Hugs all around!
Let's get to movies I did see, shall we: Inglourious Basterds. Oh how I would watch it again this very instant. You should see this if only to see Christoph Waltz's brilliant performance as a Nazi officer. Well that and Brad Pitt while over the top, was pretty darned funny. Currecto!
And well, Precious will likely be a contender for Best Film, but I wouldn't give it to it. I know I know.
Onto to male acting, I'ma not gonna lie. I haven't seen An Education or Crazy Heart. But Jeff Bridges, you are so talented I'm going to root for you. See Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds for my best supporting actor pick.
And well, my encouragement to you...skip the movies at the theater this weekend and rent yourself 500 Days of Summer. It's a "romantic comedy" and I know that you're too cool for this genre. I know it, because I live it. (Uh, with the exception of When Harry Met Sally because I have an emotional attachment to that movie like you wouldn't believe.) But yes. Rent 500 Days of Summer. Revel in the charm of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whose name I screw up more often than get right. It's got a little dark humor, a lot of quirky and so much heart (and choreographed moves! Woot woot!)
Enjoy fellow movie goers! Til next time!
